Cups of Conversation: 50 States in Pittsburg, PA
Cups of Conversation is a unique way to enhance community and connect people of all backgrounds through the simple act of sharing a drink and a conversation using a set of handmade cups. The project originated with a small community in Helena, Montana and in 2016, during National Clay Week, Cups of Conversation grew into a collaborative project with 50 artists from across the United States, each one representing a different state. Cups of Conversations as it was displayed in Everyday Café during the 2018 NCECA Conference was developed by a small group of artists from within the project including but not limited to Lindsay Scypta, Ellen Kleckner, Sarah Tancred, and Kate Fisher and in full collaboration with the Café and Kilolo Luckett.
Each of the 50 artists created a set of cups that were used in their respective state on February 14, 2018 to share a drink with someone in their local community. During the exhibition participating artists hosted small group conversations onsite at the café. On Wednesday, March 14, they meet with attendees of the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts conference (NCECA). Participants were invited to purchase a cup of coffee that was served in one of the handmade ceramic cups and encouraged to sit with one of the artists and invest time into a conversation. As a gift, the visitor keep their cup at the end of the conversation. The final event took place on Saturday, March 17, for the local Homewood and Pittsburgh community. This event followed the same structure. With the purchase of a cup of coffee and a conversation participants acquired a new handmade cup. The project was documented with a photograph of each cup and its new owner. To follow the project, visit @cupsofconversation on Instagram and Facebook.
